Common Types of Fractures that You Must Know

Fractures are among the common orthopedic injuries that are faced by people of all age groups. A fracture is a condition characterized by the breaking of a bone due to traumatic or non-traumatic causes. Depending upon the cause, any of the bones present in our body can break and the severity of the condition may also be defined by the cause.

Now, if we talk about the treatment, then it depends on various factors and they may include the cause & severity of the condition along with the age of the patient. Mild to moderate fracture cases can be fixed with rest, medication, and the application of a cast. While on the other hand, severe cases may require the application of orthopaedic implants like locking bone plates and others. The type of implant required will depend upon the location, severity, and type of fracture that occurred. In this post, we are going to discuss some of the common fracture types that are seen.

Different Types of Fractures

Transverse Fracture

This is a type of fracture where the break occurs in a straight line across the bone. Traumatic injuries like automobile accidents are known to be the commonest causes of such types of fractures.

Greenstick Fracture

Children are more prone to this type of fracture. In these conditions, a partial break occurs, where a fracture is there but the bone does not break into two pieces. The bones of the children are soft and flexible, and hence, they are more prone to experiencing greenstick fracture.

Stress Fracture

As the name suggests, this type of fracture generally occurs due to the overuse of a particular bone. Athletes and people in occupations that require the same repetitive movements are highly prone to developing stress fractures. Overuse of a particular bone results in undue stress to a bone and in such cases, a tiny crack starts to develop in the bone.

Compression Fracture

Most commonly seen in the spine, these types of fractures occur due to pressing injuries to the bone. One of the orthopedic conditions that increase the risk of compression fracture is osteoporosis. In osteoporosis, bones lose mineral density and they become weak & porous. Thus, there are high chances of developing compression fractures.

Comminuted Fracture

When a bone breaks into 3 or more pieces, the condition is known as a comminuted fracture. Tiny bone particles can also be seen at the fracture site in these cases. This type of fracture more commonly occurs due to high-energy trauma like automobile accidents.

Open Fracture

As the name suggests, an open fracture is when the broken bone comes out of the skin by piercing it. This fracture is also a cause of high-energy trauma that could occur during automobile accidents.
